What is Short-Deck Poker?

Short-deck poker is a variation of Texas Hold’em but played with a 36-card deck, omitting the 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s from the standard 52-card deck. This modification creates a fast-paced game with more action and higher hand values. In short-deck poker, the hand rankings are slightly different, making the gameplay more exciting and challenging.

The game is often played between 2 to 10 players, with 6 being the standard number. While the overall flow of the game remains similar to Texas Hold’em, the deck size significantly affects hand strength and strategies. For example, a top pair in Texas Hold’em might be quite strong, but in short-deck, it can be relatively weak due to the higher frequency of draws and stronger hands that are more common.

Short-Deck Poker Hand Rankings & Rules

In short-deck poker, the hand rankings differ slightly from those of Texas Hold’em. Here’s a breakdown of the hand rankings in short-deck poker:

6+ Poker Hands
  1. Royal Flush
  2. Straight Flush
  3. Four of a Kind
  4. Flush
  5. Full House
  6. Straight
  7. Three of a Kind
  8. Two Pair
  9. One Pair
  10. High Card

Notably, a flush beats a full house in short-deck poker, and in some variations, a set (three of a kind) can beat a straight. The removal of the 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s from the deck reshapes the strategy, making certain hands—such as straights and sets—more powerful and frequent.

Aces function both as high and low, just as they would in traditional Texas Hold’em, but they can also substitute for the 5 in a straight (e.g., 9-8-7-6-A).

Short-Deck Poker Strategy: Tips to Dominate the Table

Now that you understand the rules and where to play, let’s dive into the strategies that can help you become a short-deck poker pro. While the perfect strategy is still being explored by experts, these tips will give you an edge over your competition.

1. Embrace Draws

In short-deck poker, drawing hands are much more powerful due to the higher number of face cards in the deck. You’ll find yourself with more draws than in traditional Texas Hold’em, so don’t shy away from chasing them.

The probability of hitting a draw in short-deck poker differs from Texas Hold’em. You can multiply the number of outs by 6 on the flop and by 3 on the river to estimate your chances of improving your hand. For example, with 10 outs on the flop, your chance of improving on the turn or river is 54.8%, which can significantly alter your strategy.

2. Hitting a Flush is Harder

Due to the reduced deck size in short-deck poker, hitting a flush is more difficult compared to Texas Hold’em. With only nine cards per suit available, the chances of completing a flush are much lower. As a result, it’s important to evaluate the risk before chasing a flush.

In most short-deck games, a flush ranks higher than a full house, but it’s essential to remember that the chances of hitting your flush draw are smaller than in traditional Hold’em, particularly on the river and turn.

3. Focus on Straights

Straights are far more common in short-deck poker, so they should be your primary focus when evaluating your hand. The frequency of straights makes them an essential part of your strategy.

The strength of an open-ended straight draw is much higher than in Texas Hold’em, with about 45% of straight draws completing by the river. Playing aggressively with these hands can put pressure on your opponents and increase your chances of winning the pot.

4. Avoid Big Pocket Pairs

Big pocket pairs like AA, KK, and QQ aren’t as powerful in short-deck poker. With more draws and premium hands in the deck, these hands can often be overvalued.

It’s better to focus on suited connectors and hands that give you more potential to make straights and flushes. These hands are much stronger and can provide more opportunities for big pots.

5. Suited and Connected Hands Are Strong

Hands like 8-9, 9-10, and Q-J are significantly stronger in short-deck poker. The reduced deck size means you’ll flop an open-ended straight draw much more frequently, giving you more chances to improve your hand.

Having connected hands also increases your likelihood of hitting strong hands like straights, making them preferable over pocket pairs in this format.

6. Overbet When You Have a Strong Hand

In short-deck poker, overbetting is a common strategy, especially when you hit a big hand. Unlike Texas Hold’em, where pot-sized bets are common, overbetting can apply more pressure on your opponents.

If you hit a strong hand or even a draw with significant equity, consider overbetting the pot. This can force your opponents to fold, especially when they don’t have a hand strong enough to compete with yours.

7. Hand Equities Run Closer

In short-deck poker, hand equities are much closer compared to Texas Hold’em. For example, pocket Kings are only 10% favored against Ace-King and 6% favored against suited Ace-King. The game tends to create more ties and draws, so don’t be surprised when your big pocket pairs get outdrawn.

This aspect of the game makes hand selection and betting strategy more crucial. You’ll need to focus on making the most of draws and understanding the dynamics of each hand, as the strength of hands can fluctuate dramatically.

8. Open-Limp with Various Hands

Limping in the early stages of a short-deck game can be a strategic play. Unlike traditional Texas Hold’em, where you should be more selective with your hands, short-deck poker allows for a wider range of playable hands. This strategy is especially useful in low-stakes games or when you want to mix up your playstyle and avoid predictability.

By limping with a wider range of hands, you keep your opponents guessing about the strength of your cards, which can lead to more profitable situations.

Conclusion

Short-deck poker offers an exhilarating twist on traditional Texas Hold’em, with its altered hand rankings and strategic nuances. Mastering the game requires an understanding of its unique rules, hand rankings, and the strategies that work best in this fast-paced format.

Whether you’re playing at Natural8 India or any other poker platform, these strategies will help you improve your game and gain an edge over your opponents. Embrace the excitement of short-deck poker, and with the right approach, you’ll be well on your way to dominating the tables and turning a profit.

By following the tips above, such as focusing on straights, being aggressive with draws, and adjusting your hand selection, you’ll be better equipped to thrive in this exciting poker variant. So, get ready, take your seat at the table, and enjoy the action-packed world of short-deck poker!
