In a surprising and unprecedented move, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) took swift action to address the cancellation of Online Bracelet Event #7. Due to severe connectivity issues, the event was cancelled on Day 2, leaving around 1,100 players stranded in the middle of the competition. To make up for the disruption, the WSOP has implemented an extensive compensation plan, ensuring that no player leaves empty-handed. Refunds, retained winnings, and a massive $550,000 compensation in the form of tournament tickets are on the way.

The Fall of Event #7: What Went Wrong?

Online Bracelet Event #7 was expected to be one of the biggest highlights of this year’s WSOP series. However, the tournament was abruptly cancelled due to massive connectivity issues. With 60% of players unable to log in and continue the event, the WSOP made the tough but necessary decision to cancel the tournament.

This left many players frustrated, especially those who had already invested both time and money into the event. The WSOP released an official statement, explaining that technical difficulties were the root cause of the issue. They acknowledged the inconvenience and expressed regret, but promised to do everything in their power to maintain the integrity of the competition.

Compensation: How the WSOP is Making Things Right

To soothe the frustration of the players, the WSOP unveiled a comprehensive compensation plan for the affected participants. Here’s what the 1,100 players can expect:

  • Full Refunds: All players who entered the cancelled event will receive a full refund for their buy-ins. This ensures that their investment is returned, leaving them no worse off financially.
  • Winnings Are Safe: Players who had won bounties or cashed before the event was cancelled can rest easy, as their winnings will remain intact. This is a key component of the compensation plan, as it provides players with some value for their efforts.
  • $550,000 Compensation Fund: In addition to the refunds and retained prizes, the WSOP is distributing $500 in online tournament tickets to each of the 1,100 affected players. This amounts to a total of $550,000, designed to help players continue competing in future WSOP Online events.

How does the Poker Community React?

Unsurprisingly, the response from the poker community has been mixed. Some players are pleased with the compensation, while others feel that more could have been done. Notably, Shaun Deeb, a six-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner, expressed disappointment, arguing that the compensation was inadequate considering the number of players affected. He felt the WSOP could have offered more.

I’m not gonna reply to all the comments but man poker players are just never happy. You think @WSOPOnlinePoker wanted to crash? The resolution seems overly fair. Especially to the people getting the big bounties.

— David Baker (@audavidb) June 12, 2025

On the other hand, David Baker, another respected professional, took a more understanding stance. Baker acknowledged that the WSOP was in a difficult situation and praised the quick response. He pointed out that the technical difficulties were beyond their control, and the fact that players are being compensated quickly shows the WSOP’s commitment to fairness.

Despite the mixed reactions, many players have already received their refunds and $500 tournament tickets. Others are still waiting for their compensation, but the situation has highlighted the importance of managing online poker events efficiently.

Will WSOP’s Reputation Take a Hit?

While this cancellation and the subsequent compensation plan have certainly stirred the pot in the poker world, it is unlikely that the WSOP’s long-standing reputation will suffer long-term damage. The WSOP has built a solid foundation over many years, and this is just a minor hiccup in what has been a largely successful event series.

That said, the situation has raised the stakes for future tournaments. Players now expect flawless execution, and any future technical glitches may result in greater scrutiny from the poker community. The WSOP’s handling of this situation will undoubtedly serve as a model for other online poker tournaments, as organisers will need to learn from this experience and establish transparent and effective systems for addressing unforeseen issues.
