Jamie Morris: Thriving in the Main Event at UKPL Coventry

Attracting a strong field of 224 players each with a buy-in of £560, the UKPL Coventry Main Event Thanks to this involvement, 35 players might take out a substantial £106,390 prize pool. Jamie Morris came out on top, landing £19,831 following a calculated three-way deal—the biggest payback of his career.

Notable players also made their mark throughout the event. Among the early cashers were candidates for Player of the Year from the National Poker League (NPL), Calogero Morreale and Callum Gordon. Among other noteworthy players that boosted their bankrolls throughout the tournament were Tom Bacon, two-time GUKPT champion Christopher Johnson, and 888poker ambassador Nick Eastwood.

Final Table Data

The final table featured intense competition, with the following players battling for supremacy:

RankPlayerPrize
1Jamie Morris£19,831*
2Daniel Scridon£15,961*
3Noam De Frettes£16,098*
4Ben Miller£7,930
5Jon Glen£5,480
6Thomas Garment£4,000
7Mingrui Cen£3,360
8Anthony Hughes£2,720
9Andrew Abernathy£2,340

Important Eliminations at the Finals

With each player keen to guarantee their place in the payout structure, the activity at the final table was both exciting and quick. Andrew Abernathy pushed his last ten large blinds with pocket sevens against Jon Glen’s ace-queen first to leave. Abernathy, an ace on the flop, sadly sealed his fate and placed eighth.

Anthony Hughes came in eighth place, trying a late steal with king-jack. But Thomas Garment’s shove with the king-queen made Hughes call off his 20 large blinds, which resulted in his leaving when he didn’t get better.

Mingrui Cen came in seventh position after riding a wave of success in prior competitions. He ran across Jamie Morris’s ace-queen after pushing his last 13 large blinds with ace-seven, therefore removing Cen from contention.

Thomas Garment, who had before shone in the EAPT UK Main High Roller, met a similar end. With pocket sevens, he pushed his last 13 large blinds, but Daniel Scridon’s pocket kings were strong and Garment came home in sixth place.

A classic struggle of the blinds, Jon Glen and Ben Miller fought until Glen left. Glen jam with queen-eight, just for Miller to call with ace-jack. Glen briefly led a queen on the flop, but an ace on the turn finally guaranteed Miller’s victory and sent Glen out in fifth place.

Miller’s luck would shortly also run out. Following a sequence of decreasing chips, he discovered he had less than two large blinds and shoved with queen-six of diamonds against Jamie Morris’s pocket nines. Miller finished fourth and his search for a miracle came up short.

The Three-WAY Deal

With just three players left, a compromise was negotiated that changed the payout dynamics and guaranteed a bigger share for the ultimate winner. Though his tournament existence came to an end when he shoved with an underpair against Jamie Morris, who had the nut flush, Noam De Frettes managed to get the highest payoff.

Head-Up Battle Of Jamie Morris

Comprising almost two and a half hours, the tournament’s heads-up section was an intense struggle. Not ready to give an inch, the two players shown perseverance and skill. The key hand came at the 150,000/300,000 level—the 296th hand of the final table. Scridon called off his final 2.7 big blinds with queen-seven after Jamie Morris shoved with king-queen of spades. A seven on the flip indicated Scridon’s possible continuation, but a king on the turn destroyed those aspirations. Scridon was eliminated when the board finished with a jack, so Jamie Morris became the 2024 888poker LIVE UKpl Coventry Main Event champion.
