Legendary Tournament Director, Jack McClelland, Leaves Behind an Unmatched Legacy in Poker

The poker world is in mourning following the passing of Jack McClelland (1951–2025), one of the most respected figures in the game’s history. McClelland, a World Series of Poker (WSOP) Hall of Famer and beloved tournament director, passed away this week, leaving behind a legacy that shaped modern poker.

A Pillar of the WSOP Era

From 1984 to 1998, McClelland served as the tournament director for the World Series of Poker. During his tenure, he oversaw some of the most historic WSOP Main Events, including the crowning moments of poker icons such as Johnny Chan, Stu Ungar, Dan Harrington, Huck Seed, and Scotty Nguyen.

These events not only solidified poker as a global phenomenon but also helped define an era that many players still consider the golden age of the WSOP. McClelland’s steady hand, fairness, and professionalism ensured that the WSOP became the world’s most prestigious poker festival.

Bellagio Years and the Rise of Televised Poker

In 2002, McClelland accepted the role of tournament director at the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas, where he served until 2013. His leadership helped establish the Bellagio as the premier poker destination for both professionals and high-stakes enthusiasts.

It was during this period that televised poker reached new heights, thanks in large part to the World Poker Tour (WPT). McClelland played an instrumental role in those broadcasts, overseeing tournaments that introduced millions of viewers to the game and revolutionized how poker was consumed through hole card cameras.

Retirement and Hall of Fame Recognition

McClelland retired in December 2013, following the conclusion of the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic at Bellagio. His final tournament as director marked the end of an illustrious chapter, but recognition quickly followed.

In 2014, he was inducted into the WSOP Poker Hall of Fame, becoming the 48th inductee and only the third non-player industry contributor at the time. McClelland was honored alongside poker legend Daniel Negreanu, a testament to his lasting impact on the game.

Tributes From the Poker Community

Tributes have poured in from across the poker world, reflecting the deep respect McClelland earned during his decades in the industry.

  • Matt Savage, Executive Tour Director for the WPT, said:
“Jack McClelland was not only a friend but a pioneer and instrumental in the growth of tournament poker. I will fondly remember his time at Bellagio and the support of the WPT in the early days. Rest in peace, Jack.”
  • Barry Shulman, 2009 WSOPE Main Event Champion, added:
“Jack has been a friend, fellow poker player, and even an investor in my business for 30 years. He never had a bad word to say and always encouraged those around him. He will be missed.”

Even Phil Hellmuth and the WSOP offered condolences, highlighting just how wide-reaching McClelland’s influence was across poker’s biggest names.

A Life Dedicated to Poker

Before rising to poker fame, McClelland began as a dealer at the Sahara Casino, later advancing to shift manager and assistant tournament director. His work ethic and natural leadership led him to the WSOP and eventually to the Bellagio, where he became one of the most recognizable figures in the game.

Though best known as a director, McClelland was also a player at heart, amassing over $500,000 in career tournament cashes. Remarkably, his final recorded result came just a month ago on July 18, 2025, when he cashed in a $240 No-Limit Hold’em event at Wynn Las Vegas.

His lifelong involvement — as a dealer, tournament director, player, and fan — showcased his unwavering love for the game.

Remembering Jack McClelland

Jack McClelland’s passing marks the end of an era. Few individuals have had such a profound impact on poker from multiple angles: as an organizer, innovator, player, and ambassador. His influence helped create the professional structures and television appeal that define poker today.

As the poker community reflects on his life, one thing is certain: his contributions will live on in every tournament, broadcast, and poker room inspired by his work.

Poker fans, players, and colleagues extend heartfelt condolences to McClelland’s family and friends during this difficult time.
